Aldino Frassinelli on Home security system features

Hello Michael.

We view wireless as one more tool in the kit for particular scenarios where appropriate, not exactly a default 'best' nor is it always easier or more user friendly.  Generally speaking, wireless cameras (including the model that we sell) are only wireless when it comes to data; WiFi cameras will need 12v DC power lines run to each camera in order to work.  For many people, this presents approximately the same amount of work as wiring their cameras traditionally and negates much of the convenience factor in wireless networking.

Other factors to consider when installing wireless are the signal strength of your wireless router where you are installing your cameras, as more often than not your cameras are being installed outside.  Most people experience a significant drop in WiFi performance outside their home compared to inside, or do not have excellent coverage around the entire perimeter of their home.  If you are relying on your cameras to be active exactly when you need them, the last thing you want is to miss something because your wireless signal dropped out.

Along a similar vein, network capacity is something to consider.  Do you have quality networking equipment or are you leasing a combo router from your internet service provider?  However many cameras you need, imagine each of them as a data hungry teenager streaming netflix and playing video games all day and night on your network.

Finally, often the wireless solutions you will find from your alarm company or big box stores will involve cloud storage.  That means on top of your hardware cost paying to access your video, perhaps quite a lot of money monthly if you want more than a few days worth.  You may also be limited to motion only recordings and not be the emperor of your own domain when it comes to how you want to handle playing back your recordings.  Anything through an alarm company may also come with a contractual obligation, so be sure to read the fine print on how access to your data is handled and what the monthly costs may be.

CCTV systems come in a wide array of shapes and sizes, though if you have something installed already it may be easy to utilize your installed wiring to upgrade without breaking the bank.  We'd be more than happy to draw up a custom quote- just give us a call at (561) 288-5258 (my extension is 137 if you'd like to contact me directly.)
