I recently met the similar problem: the media player (VLC) on my Windows 8 computer won't read the DAV files I recorded. Tried to change the extension as you said above, still not playable. Luckily, found these on Google:

Both two are workable by the test. Just a simple format conversion, then the videos are playable on VLC. So share with you.
